Kim's Story.

Kim is a young boy who was born in Tibet. His story is typical of many.

"When I lived in Lhasa I had to beg for money because our family could not get work, I had to speak Chinese because all the shops and things are owned by them.

There are Chinese soldiers and police in civilian clothes everywhere. Sometimes people shout slogans like Free Tibet at them. One day I was with my sister and the Chinese fired tear gas into the people and shot at them. They were shooting all around the streets. We ran and hid in a friend’s house. People were screaming. My eyes were sore and red with the gas. Some bullets came through the door and walls, I was afraid because ordinary people were being shot. My parents wanted me to go out of Tibet to India for safety and for education.

I did not have a travel permit so I was smuggled out by hiding under blankets in the back of a truck, I hid because the Chinese stopped us at checkpoints. But we got to Nepal and then to Dharamsala. I am happy here because I can speak Tibetan and have lots of friends, I like learning all the subjects at school I learn about our country and our religion. In Tibet, my parents were not allowed to practice their religion I learn English, Hindi, Maths, Geography and Social Science. When I finish at school I want to go back to Tibet to see my parents again".
